Programs

We want to remind you about our upcoming workshops for October and November. Both of these quilt artists were first-time presenters at this year’s SCCQG Meet the Teachers meeting in April. Their projects caught our attention, as they are bright and fun. Both projects offer an opportunity to try new techniques! The cost of each workshop is $45 for guild members and $50 for guests. If you are interested in one or both of these workshops, please contact Aileen Cooke at kudacooke@aol.com.

In October, our speaker is Tiffany Hayes from Needle in a Hayes Stack. Tiffany is a Southern California quilter who got her quilting start a long, long time ago. Tiffany creates quilt patterns and tools to work with fabrics in the newest fabric lines. Her quilt designs can be found on her website, in fabric stores, catalogs and even in magazines. Check out the website: NeedleinaHayesStack.biz

Her workshop in October will be on the day of the guild meeting (Wednesday, October 2) from 9:30 to 4:00 (with a 30 min break for lunch). We’ve chosen a workshop that features her popular new ruler, the 60 deg ruler. The workshop title is Spinning Pinwheels.

This particular workshop and tool feature the popular ombré fabric (shaded from darkest at the selvage edges to lightest at the center). Don’t have an ombré jelly roll in your stash? I’m sure Sewing Arts Center could order them for us. Not sure you want to buy another ruler? Tiffany will bring extras to class for you to try. Once we try it, I’m sure we’ll all want one!

HOSPITALITY

Last names beginning with T-C, it's your turn to bring a sweet or savory snack to the October meeting. Thank you!

FOOD DRIVE

The food donation  for the Westside Food Bank is SOUP, canned or packaged.

BIRTHDAYS

Evi Newmann 10/4
Nancy Kawahara 10/6
Mary Lloyd 10/21
Sonia Daniel 10/23
In November we will host Gwen Weedon. Her lecture/trunk show topic at the guild meeting will be “25 Years of Quilting”. Her workshop the day of the meeting, (Wednesday, November 6) will be an Ocean Art Quilt. A sample will be available at the October meeting, but we have attached a picture to this email! The technique she teaches is free Curved Piecing and the size of the project is up to you! It’s a very freeing class and Gwen will hold our hands through the process of letting go in cutting curves. Sounds like fun!

In addition to what she has included on the supply list she also suggests:
  • A sharp rotary blade is number one priority
  • Bring a long cutting mat – as wide as the quilt will be . . . want to make a bigger quilt? Some students tape cutting mats together!

We hope you will join us!

It's Retreat Time

SMQG 2020 QUILTING RETREAT
SAVE THE DATE...MARCH 27-29, 2020

Our Retreat for 2020 is scheduled for March 27-29 at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Palos Verdes. It's close to home and allows us the opportunity to opt for an overnight package or a day commuter package. I am in the process of obtaining a contract so I do not have set costs yet. The Retreat Center website is: Mary & Joseph Retreat Center.

Membership

Come On, Jump In, Learn and Enjoy. It’s October, and that means it’s time to renew, or begin, your membership in SMQG for the next year. The membership fee is $45 for everyone. If you would like to receive our Newsletter by mail, please include an additional $10. We accept old-fashioned checks and even older fashioned cash. There is a membership form attached to this Newsletter so you can get a head start on filling it out. Maureen and I will have some additional copies with us at the meeting. We look forward to greeting you and welcoming you for another intriguing year at SMQG.

The membership renewal form will be sent out as a separate attachment with this month’s newsletter.

Ways & Means

We had a very successful month last month at the Ways and Means tables and also at out $1/yard fabric sale. For those who are wondering, there was a small amount of sale fabric left and it was donated to Quilts of the Heart to use for their charitable quilts.

We appreciate your donations to Ways and Means and your purchases. It all helps with the Guild finances. Please remember the Ways and Means table s are usually set up by 6:00 to 6:15 pm. Once they are open for business, it is “ first come, first serve.” So, if you want to have first pick, please arrive early.

Vice President

Thank you one and all for your help with making vanity bags for the El Segundo Chapter of EGA. The final count is 125! I know they will be greatly appreciated especially by the final recipients.

2. And thank you to all of the members who made the President Thank -you Apple Blocks for Kennalee. (The cat is out of the bag. She knows about them.) They will be presented at the October meeting. So if you have one to turn in, you can either mail it to me or bring it to the meeting and I will include it in the batch. It is not too late. If you need the pattern, shoot me an e-mail. ALSO she would love it if you could sign your block. I will have pens and the blocks(at the break) so that you can sign them for her.

3. Things are likely to get very busy with the holidays pretty soon. So in an effort to keep it simple, I propose that we do 6-1/2” (includes seam allowance) Nine Patch blocks in the color of your choice for our future charity sewing event. You can use leftover jelly roll strips for this. Bring them to the October meeting or mail them to me.

4. SCCQG - The next meeting is October 12. Let me know if you are planning to attend so that I can RSVP for our group. The topic is about using Social Media to promote our quilting activities.

— By Olivia Carnahan

Philanthropy

The food donation for the October meeting for Westside Food Bank is SOUP – canned or packaged.

Philanthropy is happily collecting our regular items for AVIVA and the Ronald McDonald House. We would also like to make a donation to of quilts to the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA to help make the lives of their pediatric patients a little more comfortable. Quilts for children are fun and sometimes easier to make so if you have some spare time and are trying to lower your stash collection we would be happy to collect them too.

Quick Quilty Tip!

Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen the tip of a chopstick for a free stiletto tool. If it breaks or dulls after repeated usage, just sharpen it again!
