TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

MAY 2005
CRAZY QUILT BLOCK

This month’s project is a Crazy Quilt Block. This block is sewn on a foundation, using either paper or fabric. But don’t panic – there are no lines to sew on! This foundation is just there to give it some stability while you are sewing. Use a lightweight muslin or regular copy paper. The muslin will remain on the square but you can carefully remove the paper after the block is set in a quilt. Cut a square about 9". You will cut it down to 8½" when finished.

Start with a triangle shape piece, not too small, about 3" or 4" on a side. Place that piece face UP on your foundation square somewhere near the center. Then place another scrap (3 or 4 sided) face DOWN on top so the raw edges match on one side.

Stitch ¼" from that matched edge. Flip the piece back so that it is right side up and press. Trim off excess fabric.

Repeat with another scrap. Use straight edges for easier sewing. And be careful not to work yourself into a corner where a piece will need to be appliquéd.

Continue flipping and sewing, always pressing and trimming until the foundation is covered.

Press well and trim down to an exact 8½" square. If desired, embroidery by hand or machine can be added before trimming to size.

Don’t forget to bring (labeled) blocks to the May meeting. There will be some samples, and it will be fun to see what guild members do with this technique.
