BLOCK EXCHANGE -- MARCH/APRIL 2006
A SPRINGTIME BASKET
![]()
Basket block is 6 ½" unfinished.
NOTE: A finished 1½" half-square triangle block will be a 2" square
unfinished.

From Background Fabric AND Flower Print Cut:
2 - 2 ½" squares and cut diagonally
OR Use 1 ½" half-square triangle paper for accuracy.
From Basket Print Cut:
1 - 4" square. Cut in half diagonally and then cut one triangle in half. Use
these small triangles for the two half-square triangle blocks at basket bottom.
Cut the 4" square of background in half diagonally and sew 1 part to large basket triangle to form large square. Trim the square to an exact 3 ½". Cut other triangle in half and reserve to make basket bottom half-square triangles.
Make 4 - 1 ½" half-square triangle blocks with background and flower print. (If necessary trim to 2".)
Make 2 – 1 ½" half-square triangle blocks with reserved triangles of background and basket fabrics. (Trim to be 2" unfinished.)
Sew 2 flower print half-square triangle squares together, twice. Note picture – they will be opposites! Sew one set to the large (background & basket) square. Sew the small background square to the other set and add to block.
Sew 1 basket print half-square triangle block to each of the background rectangles. Note that they will also need to be opposites. Add one to the correct side of the basket. See picture for guidance. Sew the last 2" block to the other one, and add to the assembled block.
If needed, trim up your block to a 6 ½" square.
Sign your name on an inside seam allowance or on a slip of paper attached to the block with a stitch. Bring to the March or April guild meeting for a chance to win all the blocks!
