TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

APRIL 2005
DRUNKARD'S PATH

To make a block exactly like mine, you will only need 2 fabrics. However a scrappy look with 4 or 8 different fabrics would look great. The templates are in the newsletter. Trace or cut out both templates. The outer lines are your CUTTING lines. If using only 2 fabrics you can iron them together to cut both at once. Pin together when cutting. If you reprint the templates carefully check the size of the templates  when printed out. They should make a 4.5" square (4" finished.)

Mark your SEWING lines ¼” inside the cut edge. Use a C-Thru ruler and draw directly onto the fabric using a sharp pencil. Also mark the center of the curve. Clip the larger piece at this mark and on each side of it, about half-way to corner. Be careful not to cut all the way into your seam line.

Putting right sides together, place the larger piece on top of the smaller. Match up the center and pin together. Pin at the corners and the other clips. More pinning helps if you feel you need it.

Using a small running stitch, sew along the drawn line, taking a tiny backstitch every few stitches. Some people do not knot their thread but backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam. Press the seam allowance to the large piece. Repeat sewing for all blocks then sew the 4 squares together.

If you have no problems sewing curves on the machine, please do - and come share your technique with me!
